Oxford Net Zero: The story so far

Jul 11, 2025

Oxford Net Zero is excited to share a new summary of its work. Oxford Net Zero: The story so far gives a representative look at our work over the life of the programme since its inception, organised around three key areas:

  1. An integrated international research community.
  2. Transformative research.
  3. Engagement with policymakers, businesses and civil society.

Through this work we aim to inform the transition to a just net zero that benefits everyone.

Dr Steve Smith, ONZ Executive Director, said:

When we started Oxford Net Zero in 2021, only a handful of countries and companies were talking about going all the way to net zero emissions. Now it’s mainstream, and many in our team have played key roles in making that happen. But the challenge of turning pledges into faster, more effective action has never been greater.

Professor Sam Fankhauser, ONZ Research Director, said:

Net Zero requires cross-disciplinary answers. Oxford Net Zero has been uniquely successful in bringing together experts from across the university  to craft truly interdisciplinary solutions.

Over the course of the next year, ONZ will be moving into its second phase, and we hope to take our work forward in new and exciting ways. If you’d like to stay in touch with us, you are welcome to subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on social media (LinkedIn, Bluesky and X).

Thank you to everyone who has supported us and collaborated with us so far. We’re extremely proud of what we’ve achieved together, and we’re looking forward to the future.
