In 2018, American University became the first higher education institution to achieve a carbon neutral certification in the US. By buying renewable energy credits, reducing electricity use by 20%, and building LEED Gold-certified buildings, American was able to integrate the vision of net zero campus emissions into its practices and sustainability ethos.
