Oxford Net Zero partners with AXA XL on research in India, Mexico and Kenya

Oxford Net Zero is excited to announce that it is working with the insurance company AXA XL, the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society (InSIS), and the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment to conduct research on private sector approaches to net zero in India, Mexico and Kenya. The project is funded by AXA XL and led by ONZ Fellow Dr Jessica Omukuti and ONZ Co-Investigator Dr Javier Lezaun. Dr Radhika Khosla, ONZ Co-Investigator, will also play a key role in the project. Dr Khosla is Associate Professor at the Smith School and Dr Lezaun is Director of InSIS.

The project began in September 2024 and will run until March 2026. It is focusing on two sectors: construction and buildings, and food and beverages. It will also at look criteria for responsible carbon offsetting in each of the three case study countries. The researchers hope to glean insights that can be applied more broadly in other developing country contexts.

Speaking about the project, Dr Omukuti said:

“Through Oxford Net Zero, our previous work has highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of how the concept of net zero can be effectively implemented in developing countries. This funding partnership with AXA XL will enable us to gain greater insights on how the private sector is approaching the transition and in particulars focus on equity and justice for communities in these regions.”
