Call for participants: “Unlocking the power of youth to develop equity in net-zero governance”

Sep 25, 2024

Oxford Net Zero’s Engagement Team have an open call for youth aged 18-35 years old to participate in a new 8-month long research project to embed equity criteria into net-zero governance.

There is perhaps no single demographic that will be more affected by today’s decisions on how we achieve net zero than youth, especially those from the most climate-vulnerable countries. Net-zero governance raises distributive and procedural climate justice concerns, key to the global youth climate movement. Despite this, both youth and climate justice perspectives are consistently under-represented in net-zero standards and governance. Without these perspectives, company-level net-zero commitments risk remaining highly technical and decoupled from equity and fairness.

In partnership with the British Standards Institution and funded by the ACCESS Flex Fund, we are bringing together youth climate justice representatives from six continents to engage in the international standard-setting processes and develop equity criteria for net-zero governance. These criteria will be iteratively co-produced with a selection UK business representatives to develop a set of governance criteria that addresses the gap of how companies can embed equity concerns into their net-zero transition plans.

Led by Kaya Axelsson, Alexis McGivern and Dr Matilda Becker, this project responds to a long-established yet engrained issue of how groups at different geographical scales and with differentiating power can engage in policy- and decision-making to address environmental challenges. The project therefore aims to develop novel methods for bringing global youth’s expertise into climate governance, demonstrating how youth and marginalised voices can be included in governance processes more broadly.

We are looking for twelve individuals aged 18-35 years old to participate in our research project.

If you are interested in participating, please read  this information sheet to learn more about the project, benefits of taking part, and details of how to apply.

Deadline for applications is 23:59 14th October 2024 (BST).
