NET ZERO FOR MY BUSINESS

Net Zero: A global business target

Net zero for your business means achieving a state in which activities in your value chain result in no net impact on the climate. This means rapidly reducing emissions in line with science-based pathways, and balancing any remaining emissions with carbon removals.

Around 40% of the world’s annual GDP now derives from nations and regions that are discussing or have set legislative net zero emissions targets, to be achieved by 2050 at the latest. While changes associated with a transition to a lower-carbon economy present significant risk, they also create significant opportunities for organisations focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions.

By pledging a target publicly, businesses can inspire climate action elsewhere even at the level of national governments, signal meaningful climate leadership to their consumers and the public, and hold themselves accountable to achieving a clear science-based target. In general, minimum agreed upon criteria for pledges demand they cover all gasses and all activities and scopes, as data allows; reach net zero by 2050 (or sooner for capacity and equity reasons); set interim targets; outline immediate action.

Of course, pledging a target is only a first step in the race to net zero. We at Net Zero Climate provide vetted, scientifically credible tools, reports, and frameworks to help measure emissions baselines, set, and announce a new net zero pledge, develop a net zero business plan, publish your business’ progress and form partnerships to enable businesses to go to net zero together.
