Joseph Asplet is a Postdoctoral Researcher based in the Department of Earth Sciences and has research interests in pure and applied seismology. Joseph is currently working on projects on monitoring microseismicity (small magnitude earthquakes, typically < 2) for offshore geological carbon storage projects.
As part of the SHARP Storage consortium, which is funded by EU ACT (Accelerating CCS Technologies), he has researched the potential of shear-wave splitting to measure the stress state of the CO2 storage complex prior to and during injection. He is working to develop methods to monitor offshore microseismicity using cost-effective onshore instrumentation as part of the Agile Initiative research sprint “What do we need to know to safely store CO2 beneath our shelf seas?”. The Agile Initiative is an NERC Changing the Environment programme based in the Oxford Martin School.
